Dhangadhi: The Kailali branch of the Federation of Journalists has formally addressed Mayor Gopal Hamal of Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city, submitting a letter of attention in response to statements made by the Mayor on December 5th via his official Facebook page.
Expressing concern over Mayor Hamal's remarks, particularly pertaining to the dissemination of news publications, the Federation of Journalists in Kailali registered its protest against what they perceive as an infringement on the freedom of expression. Himal Joshi, the President of the Federation of Journalists in Kailali, underscored the potential repercussions of the Mayor's statement, which could incite the general public against journalists and media houses.
In the letter of attention, it is explicitly stated that Mayor Hamal bears responsibility should any journalists or media houses face attacks, insults, or threats as a consequence of his statements. Mayor Hamal, in response, clarified that his intention was not to accuse any specific media entity. He emphasized that his comments, disseminated through his Facebook page, were aimed at raising awareness about individuals spreading misleading news. The Federation of Journalists seeks a reconsideration of the Mayor's stance to safeguard the principles of freedom of the press and ensure the safety of journalists in the region.
