Kanchanpur: At Purnima Basic School in Balmi, Laljhadi Rural Municipality-3, students with physical disabilities are being taught alongside other students, while separate teachers are arranged to provide additional support.

Lok Bahadur Wadayak, principal of Purnima Basic School, stated that the initiative aims to ensure that children with physical disabilities are not deprived of education. This year alone, four children with disabilities have been admitted.

“With the help of donor agencies, we have arranged separate teachers to teach children with disabilities in the child development class,” said Principal Wadayak. “We identified disabled children in the ward and enrolled them in school to boost their morale by allowing them to learn alongside other students.”

Teachers report significant progress among the students. “There is one child in class 5 who cannot see or speak, but we are encouraging them to increase their interest in studies,” said a teacher.

Mayank Rana, a student from Balmi who previously could not leave his room due to his disability, now studies in the classroom with other students. His mother, Mrs. Rana, expressed her joy: “I never imagined my son would be enrolled in school like this. Now he can walk a little, attends school, and I take him to and from school myself. After enrolling, there has been a noticeable improvement compared to before.”

Currently, three children with disabilities are enrolled in the child development class at Purnima Basic School.

Similarly, at Bhanu Secondary School, students with disabilities are being integrated with other students. Principal Ved Prasad Upadhyay stated that classes are being organized for students with hearing difficulties, visual impairments, and physical disabilities by arranging seating specifically for their needs.

“Many students with disabilities are still out of reach of education. Through this year’s student enrollment campaign, 23 children with disabilities have gained access to education,” said Principal Upadhyay.

While provisions generally exist for separate schools for children with disabilities, no such school is available in this area. The inclusion efforts at Purnima Basic School and Bhanu Secondary School have made education more accessible for disabled children and their families.
