Baitadi: A significant number of women in rural areas of Baitadi district have been found to be suffering from reproductive system infections (PID), according to findings from a sexual and reproductive health camp conducted in Patan Municipality.

Among the nearly 500 women who sought services at three different health institutions in Patan Municipality, 50 percent were diagnosed with PID, said Premsagar Bhatta, Chief of Patan Primary Health Center. "During the camp, we found that many women had PID issues, and we provided treatment accordingly," he said, attributing the infections to factors such as growth of tissue in the uterus, hormonal disorders, and unprotected sexual intercourse.

Additionally, 25 percent of the women examined at the camp were found to have abnormal uterine bleeding. Health workers cited growth of tissue in the uterus, hormonal imbalances, and other causes for this condition. Four women with severe bleeding issues were referred to better-equipped hospitals for treatment, and two women were suspected of having cancer and referred for further examination.

Five percent of the women attending the camp suffered from uterine prolapse. Three of these cases have been recommended for surgery, while others were treated with a ring pessary. Health professionals noted that uterine prolapse was often caused by carrying heavy loads during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as frequent childbirth.

Urinary tract infections were diagnosed in 15 percent of the women, largely attributed to poor hygiene and inadequate water consumption. Similarly, 10 percent of the women reported gastric problems, which Dr. Neeta Timilsina said were exacerbated by poor eating habits, such as skipping meals and consuming milk or tea on an empty stomach.

Dr. Suresh Bahadur Bista reported that some women were found to have kidney stones during ultrasound scans and advised them to increase their water intake.

Madan Singh Mahara, Chief of the Health Branch at Patan Municipality, said that conducting such camps made it easier for citizens in remote areas to access specialized health services. "We organized the camp to bring healthcare closer to rural communities. It has benefited women to some extent, and we plan to continue such initiatives in the future," he said.

The camp was held at Patan Primary Health Center, Siddheshwor Health Post Khodpe, and Basantapur Health Post, with services provided by a team of health workers including gynecologist Dr. Neeta Timilsina, Dr. Rejina Khadka, and Dr. Suresh Bahadur Bista.
