Bajura: The campaign to demolish Chhaugoths has restarted in Bajura to eliminate the practice of isolating menstruating women in huts.

The District Police Office, Bajura, has resumed the initiative from Monday, identifying 29 Chhaugoths in Budhiganga Municipality alone. Chief of the District Police Office, Dilip Kumar Giri, stated that preparations are underway to dismantle these huts in the presence of local representatives and residents.

“During monitoring, we found 29 Chhaugoths. The plan is to demolish them with the involvement of local representatives and the community. Initially, locals expressed willingness to remove them themselves, so we have given them a few days. If they are not dismantled within that period, we will proceed with the demolition,” said Giri.

The campaign will be extended to all nine local levels of the district. The initiative follows a tragic incident on December 10, 2018, when a fire in a Chhaugoth in Budhinanda Municipality-9, Pandusain, claimed the lives of 35-year-old Amba Bohara and her two sons, nine-year-old Suresh and seven-year-old Ramit Bohara. The incident led to increased efforts to eradicate the Chhaugoth practice, which has long been condemned as a harmful tradition.
