Dhangadhi: Sushila Bista of Matiyari, Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City-6, Kailali, has begun earning a substantial income through commercial floriculture.

Bista has been engaged in commercial floriculture for the past two years after registering her farm, earning a significant income from flower sales. Operating on two bighas of rented land, she reports an annual turnover of up to two million rupees from flower production. After deducting expenses, including labor, her annual savings reach up to eight lakh rupees. Flowers are produced year-round, and during this year’s Dashain-Tihar festival alone, her turnover reached approximately one million rupees.

“The price varies according to the season. Flowers are sold for 150 to 500 rupees per kilogram and 60 to 100 rupees per piece,” she said. “With a family of four, this income has helped cover household expenses and enabled me to save. I have become self-employed.”

Bista pursued floriculture after completing a one-week training course provided by the Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan Municipality. She cultivates flowers including aster, rose, rajnigandha, sunflower, and betel nut. Her farm employs eight workers, each receiving a daily wage of Rs. 600.

Although she earns well from floriculture, Bista highlights challenges in accessing flower seeds and fertilizers. She has received subsidies for plastic tunnels, irrigation boring, and drip irrigation from the Directorate of Agricultural Development and Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan Municipality. She also noted the absence of an insurance policy for floriculture, emphasizing that such support would make it easier for flower farmers.
