Blind Kanchanpur couple inspires community with resilience and positivity
Kanchanpur: Rama Rana and Sudama Rana of Kaluwapur, Shuklaphanta Municipality-11, Kanchanpur, are a couple blind from birth who have not let their disability hinder their understanding or experience of life.
The couple married in 2052 BS with the support of local villagers. Since both are blind, they rely heavily on their neighbors, who helped construct the small house they currently live in. “My parents did not keep any land, now there is only six to seven acres of land to live on. We were able to live there when a good neighbor built a house on it,” said Rama.
Rama and Sudama receive disability allowances through blue cards issued by the ward office, which serve as their primary source of income. “We use that money to buy salt, oil, rice, lentils, soap and medicine,” said Sudama. Neighbors assist with daily chores, including cooking and cleaning, while Sudama manages small household tasks and laundry based on her estimation and experience.
Rama also works as a janitor, a skill he learned in childhood. “People who are cured when they get janitors give them some money and sometimes even invite them to their homes,” he said, noting that this small income helps ease household expenses.
“The eyes may not see, but the light in the heart never goes out,” said Sudama with a smile. Local resident Nawaraj Pant praised the couple’s positive outlook, saying, “The blind Rana couple are very simple and positive-minded people. Even in the midst of difficulties, both of them never complain, but their self-confidence has taught others in the village a new perspective on life.”
Villagers describe Rama and Sudama Rana as an exemplary couple of true love and compassion. Despite their lack of vision, they have found light in each other and have become an inspiring example of how self-confidence, love, and compassion can guide life even in a dark world.
