River blocked due to landslide in Darchula, settlements at a high risk

Darchula: Kharkhola has been blocked in Naugad Rural Municipality Ward no. 3 of Darchula. Chandravati Thagunna, a local, informed that the debris from the landslide has blocked the river which appears as a dam at the confluence of Kharkhola and Naugad rivers due to the landslide.

The river was blocked due to the landslide on Thursday morning. She said that the nearby settlement was in danger due to the riverblockade. She said that the river has been blocked right at the junction of rivers and streams. No attempt has been made to unblock the river. Although, the locals are trying to unblock it themselves, it has not been possible.

Prem Bahadur Thagunna, a local, said that the debris blocking the river in Naugad would burst suddenly, putting the lower settlement at risk. He said 'the blocking of the river has increased the risk in Jamir of Naugad Rural Municipality-3. If the debris is not removed in time, even the settlements below will be in danger.' The locals are now working to unblock the river on their own initiative, they allege that even the local government has not shown any interest in unblock the river.

Three people were killed in a landslide in Naugad of Darchula district on Thursday alone.
