Godavari Mayor fined for drunk driving after Government vehicle accident in Kailali

Dhangadhi: Birendra Bhatta, the mayor of Godavari Municipality in Kailali, has been fined after it was revealed that he was driving a government vehicle under the influence of alcohol when it met with an accident.


According to the District Traffic Police Office, Kailali, Mayor Bhatta was fined Rs 500 for drunk driving and an additional Rs 500 for reckless driving, bringing the total fine to Rs 1,000.

Chief Police Inspector Resham Acharya of the District Traffic Police Office, Kailali, confirmed that the fine has been imposed and the vehicle has been released. He stated that after the fine was paid to the traffic office through a relative, the vehicle, which had been under the control of the Kailali Village Police Post, was released following completion of necessary procedures.

The government vehicle (Suppra 01001 Jha 601) driven by Mayor Bhatta was involved in an accident on Saturday night in the Geta area along the Mohanapul–Attariya six-lane road section. According to police, the vehicle went out of control and struck a roadside railing.

No casualties were reported in the incident, although the front portion of the vehicle sustained damage. Police were alerted by locals who noticed the government vehicle involved in the accident.

Authorities stated that while a sobriety test could not be conducted at the scene at night, action was taken after Mayor Bhatta admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol.
