Dhangadhi: Serious dissatisfaction has emerged within the Nepali Congress regarding the leadership and functioning of the Far West provincial government. Amid growing concerns over the performance of Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah, some provincial assembly members have even called for a change in leadership.

Following provincial-level discussions, party president Gagan Kumar Thapa held a separate, detailed meeting with provincial leaders, ministers, and MPs. During the discussion, lawmakers expressed strong dissatisfaction over the government’s performance, budget allocation, and the role of ministers.

The dissatisfied MPs have demanded an immediate cabinet reshuffle, alleging bias in the distribution of schemes, limited benefits reaching only a few leaders, and an overall weak government performance. Some members also expressed the view that the Chief Minister himself should be replaced.

Sources said tensions surfaced during the meeting, including a dispute between Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah and Provincial Affairs and Legislation Committee Chairman Diwan Singh Bista. The disagreement intensified after allegations that the Chief Minister had not accepted party leadership even after the special general convention.

In response, Chief Minister Shah clarified that he had not rejected the party president following the court’s decision. He also noted that many leaders had supported Sher Bahadur Deuba prior to the special general convention.

Despite increasing dissatisfaction, there is a strong inclination within the party to avoid an immediate change in leadership. Some lawmakers, including Chief Whip Bikram Singh Dhami, have warned that replacing the Chief Minister at this stage could alter the power balance and risk the party’s position in government.

Instead, they have proposed a comprehensive cabinet reshuffle, suggesting that new faces be given opportunities.

Leaders also discussed the potential risks to the current power equation, including the possibility of a new political alignment between the NCP and UML. Concerns were raised that such developments could impact the stability of the provincial government.

Party president Gagan Kumar Thapa emphasized the need for unity and stability within the party. He urged leaders to avoid airing dissatisfaction publicly and instead focus on strengthening the organization.

He stated that further discussions on the provincial government, budget distribution, and possible ministerial changes would take place after returning to Kathmandu, where decisions would be made. Thapa also indicated that he would provide necessary guidance to ensure a balanced provincial budget.

The ongoing dispute within the Nepali Congress in the Far West Province reflects not only questions of leadership but also deeper political challenges related to governance, budget allocation, and organizational balance. Leaders have warned that failure to address these issues promptly could affect the stability of the provincial government.
