Kanchanpur: The installation of a wire mesh fence has significantly reduced human-wildlife conflict in Kanchanpur.

The fence spans an eight-kilometer stretch from Nageshwor Community Forest to Ward No. 7, Environment Community Forest, in Shuklaphanta Municipality-6. It has effectively prevented wild animals from Shuklaphanta National Park from entering residential areas and farmlands.

Previously, animals like wild boars, nilgai, and chitals frequently entered the fields, damaging vegetables and grain crops, causing immense trouble for local farmers. "Herds of nilgai and chital would destroy entire crops at night, forcing locals to seek livelihoods in India," said Ratan Rana, a local farmer. "This has ceased since the installation of the wire fence."

The Sundevi Consumers' Committee implemented the fencing project with support from Tal, the National Nature Conservation Fund, and the Environment Buffer Community Forest. The cost of the wire mesh fence is Rs 2,200 per meter.

To further mitigate human-animal conflict, the initiative also includes electric and solar lights installed on 80 poles along the fence, sirens at 10 strategic locations, and the distribution of halogen torches to 70 residents near the park. Additionally, seven specialized guns for deterring elephants have been provided.

This collaborative effort has brought relief to the local community while preserving the delicate balance between humans and wildlife in the area.
