Dhangadhi: The District Police Office, Kailali has registered a case against six persons for inciting suicide after Dhiraj Chaudhary, 23, of Kailari Gaonpalika Ward No. 2, North Manjhara was found hanged. Manmati Chaudhary, mother of the deceased, had lodged a complaint against Parvati Khadka, Kopila Khadka, Nimsara Khadka, Dinesh Khadka, Madan Khadka, and Yamaraj Khadka of Manjhara. Manmati had complained about them alleging that she had beaten her son to death by hanging him on suspicion of setting fire to the cowshed.

The incident, which took place last February, is now pending in court. However, Dhiraj's mother Manmati Chaudhary is worried that the culprit will not be prosecuted. "It's been almost a year since my son was brought to justice by the police, the public prosecutor, and the court, but no one has been convicted yet," she said, complaining.

Similarly, police arrested a local devotee Siradi on December 29, 2008 on the charge of forcing a 25-year-old married woman Sarada Deuba of Dhamangadhi Sub-Metropolitan Ward No. 17 to commit suicide. She was found dead in Tallagada forest on November 25. Her death is believed to have been caused by an illicit affair with Siradi. Sarada had fled the village for 15 days after hearing the news of her death. Siradi has been remanded in custody for trial on Monday.

These are just representative examples. Spokesperson of the District Police Office, Kailali, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ved Prakash Joshi said that the incidence of suicide has been increasing in Kailali recently. So far in the current financial year, 11 cases of suicide incentives have been registered.

It seems that such incidents come out after the provision of punishment in the law, 'he said. According to the police, there are many cases related to suicide incitement in the district after the legal provision to take action against those who are forced to commit suicide. The Criminal Code Act stipulates imprisonment for five years and a fine of up to Rs 50,000 for forcing a person to commit suicide.

If convicted of forcing Dhiraj of Kailari Municipality and Sharda of Dhamangadhi Sub-Metropolitan Municipality to commit suicide, he will be sentenced to five years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000. Complaints of a similar nature were made even before the provision of action was taken against those who encouraged suicide. However, sources said that other cases have been filed to take action or the case has not been registered.
