Families living in tents due to landslide demand proper accommodation

Dallu Bohara of Kailali's Chure Rural Municipality Ward No. 5 has been living in a tent for the past two weeks. His family has been living in tents provided by Nepal Red Cross Society Kailali at a place called Belchplan near Ward No. 5 under Bhim Dutta Highway.

His family had been displaced after a landslide damaged his house in the rainy season. Arjun Bahadur Dhami of the same area is also preparing to stay in a tent till the rains subside.

"There is a risk of landslides due to rainfall" he said. It is not possible to live in our house it’s risky. So we’ll stay on this road until the rains stop. ' Like Dhami and Bohara, 29 landslide-affected families of Chure Rural Municipality have been living on the Bhim Dutt Highway. They spend the day in the settlement looking after their farms and livestock, and at night they spend time with their families under the same tent.

Most of the settlements in the Rural Municipality are now at risk due to landslides. Some families have been displaced, while others have moved due to the threat of landslides.

Displaced family members have expressed grief over having to live on the road to escape the landslide. The families displaced by the landslide have demanded  safe accommodation.

According to Nara Bahadur Tamang, chairman and spokesperson of Chure Rural Municipality the residents had gone to live in Khutiya.

"Locals have demanded that the settlements be relocated to avoid floods and landslides," said Ward Chairman Tamang. "One hundred and fifty-one people from 29 houses in Patreni have been displaced." Families of Rajwan and Gunigaun of Ward No. 5 have also been displaced. It is difficult to solve the problem unless their settlements are relocated. '
