Kanchanpur: The Armed Police Force (APF) began security checks at the Gaddachauki border point in Kanchanpur on Saturday morning using two trained dogs: a Labrador named Alpha and a German Shepherd named Delta.

Beyond the festive season, the APF has established a permanent Canine Unit at its Border Security Company in Gaddachauki to conduct regular inspections. Superintendent of Police Prem Prakash Sigdel, Battalion Commander of the APF’s No. 35 Shaileshwari Battalion, said this is the force’s fifth canine unit.

“The Armed Police Force had previously established canine units at four other major border crossings across the country, deploying trained dogs to assist in border security,” Sigdel said. “Gaddachauki now hosts the fifth such unit.”

He noted that this is the first time the APF has deployed trained dogs for security checks in Sudurpaschim Province.

“This is also the first canine unit established by the APF in Sudurpaschim Province,” he added. “It is expected to help reduce criminal activities along the Nepal-India border.”

The unit, stationed at the Border Security Company, is led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Jagadish Bhatta and comprises five trained personnel and two trained dogs: a female Labrador named Alpha and a male German Shepherd named Delta.

“The German Shepherd will screen for weapons and explosives at the border, while the Labrador, Alpha, will check for narcotics,” Sigdel said.

He added that the APF has significantly increased security vigilance along the border area in Kanchanpur.

The inspection process, which was inaugurated on Friday morning, was attended by Kanchanpur Chief District Officer Madan Koirala, No. 35 Shaileshwari Battalion Commander Prem Prakash Sigdel, Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, Netramani Giri, and others.
