Teenager swept away in flash flood in Kanchanpur river, body recovered
Kanchanpur: A 14-year-old girl, Garima Tiruwa of Belauri Municipality-9, Kanchanpur, died after being swept away by a flash flood in the Jharana River. Her body, which had been missing since Thursday evening, was recovered on Friday morning from the Belauri-Ratanpur Nala area, around 500 meters downstream from the incident site, according to the District Police Office, Kanchanpur.
Police said Garima had gone to bathe in the nearby Jharana River along with her sisters and a group of 6–7 people after completing paddy plantation work in the field of local resident Prem Mahar. During the visit, she was swept away when the river’s water level suddenly rose.
It is reported that two of the group members had gone into the middle of the river to swim. As Garima did not know how to swim, she was caught in the strong current and swept away. Her friends attempted to rescue her but were unsuccessful.
Following the incident, her friends immediately informed her family, local residents, and the police. A search operation was carried out by Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and locals until Thursday night, but was suspended due to darkness and resumed on Friday morning.
Police stated that during a joint search operation involving around 30 personnel, including disaster response-trained security personnel from the Area Police Office Beldandi, Armed Police Force units in Bhuda and Pachui, and local residents, Garima’s body was recovered on Friday morning about 500 meters downstream from the incident site.
