Kathmandu: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has urged the general public to remain on high alert, citing the possibility of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms in various parts of the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Authority stated that, based on forecasts from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, heavy rainfall is likely in many areas of the hilly and Terai regions of provinces other than Karnali Province. According to Authority spokesperson Shanti Mahat, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in most parts of the country, increasing the risk of flash floods, landslides, rising water levels in rivers and streams, erosion, and inundation.

In view of the potential risks, residents of vulnerable areas have been urged to take special precautions. People living near rivers and streams prone to flash floods, landslide-prone zones, and riverbanks have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement, identify safe locations, and remain prepared.

The Authority has also recommended that residents in flood-prone areas move to higher and safer places, inform family members and neighbors in a timely manner, and relocate to safe shelters if necessary. Security agencies at all three levels, local authorities, volunteers, and stakeholders have been requested to remain on standby for disaster response. Concerned agencies have also been asked to keep equipment such as dozers, excavators, loaders, and other machinery ready along vulnerable highways and road sections.

Similarly, partner organizations involved in preparedness, pre-emptive action, and response have been directed to remain alert in coordination with district and local disaster management committees. The Authority has advised the public to contact 1155 for information related to rain and floods and to save emergency hotline numbers—1149, 100 of Nepal Police, and 1114 of the Armed Police Force of Nepal—on their mobile phones for assistance during emergencies.

The Authority has further urged citizens to regularly follow updated weather forecasts, warnings, and information issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and the Authority. Experts have noted that with the monsoon currently active, incidents of floods, landslides, and inundation may increase in various parts of the country, and timely precautions remain the most effective way to minimize potential loss of life and property.
