Preserving Himalayan environment a priority, says President Ram Chandra Poudel
Kathmandu: Ram Chandra Poudel has said that sustainable Himalayan tourism, responsible mountaineering, and preservation of the Himalayan environment are the need of the day.
Addressing the ‘Escarpment Summit-2026’ organized in honor of Everest climbers from various countries, President Poudel emphasized that conserving the Himalayan environment is an urgent priority.
“Escarpment is not only the geographical identity of Nepal but also the prestige and pride of the entire country and a priceless natural heritage of the world. The conservation, promotion, publicity, and balanced utilization of these heritages have contributed to our economy through Nepal’s tourism sector,” he said.
President Poudel noted that challenges such as global warming, the effects of climate change, and the accumulation of garbage in mountaineering areas have become pressing issues. “Further efforts and collaboration are needed to address these problems and make mountaineering safe, sustainable, and technology-friendly while preserving the ecosystem and biodiversity of the Everest region,” he said.
He stated that the conference holds special significance as it brings together Everest climbers from around the world to discuss various aspects of the Himalayan region, including Mount Everest, and to promote international cooperation, dialogue, and awareness for mountain and ecosystem conservation.
“I am confident that this conference will pay special attention to keeping Mount Everest, which is the pride, glory, and identity of not only Nepal and its people but also the world, in its natural form,” President Poudel added.
Similarly, Mukunda Prasad Niraula expressed confidence that the ‘Esgarmatha Summit-2026’ would contribute to promoting tourism in Nepal. He also raised concerns about the impacts of climate change being increasingly felt on Mount Everest and other mountains across the country.
