Mahendranagar: Last year, Kanchanpur police brought 334 people, including women and men, under the ambit of action in drug cases. From April to mid-April last year, 334 accused, including 305 men and 29 women, were arrested in drug-related cases, informed Chief Superintendent of Police Khadka Khatri of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur. According to him, during that period, the police seized 753 grams of brown heroin, 33 kg 364 grams of hashish, and 2 kg 42 grams of marijuana, among other drugs.

“Last year, 201 cases were registered in drug cases and the action process moved forward,” said Superintendent of Police Khatri. “We have conducted a campaign for action and awareness.” He said that drugs have spread severely in society in recent times and it is time for all citizens to be aware of prevention and reduction.

“The time has come for locals to be vigilant up to the Toll Development Committee level,” he said. “It is necessary to provide timely information to the police regarding drug abuse and addiction.”

According to the statistics of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, 22 people were arrested in drug-related cases in Baisakh 2082. Similarly, 40 people were arrested in Jestha, 20 in Ashar, 16 in Shrawan, 16 in Bhadau, 11 in Asoj, 29 in Kartik, 23 in Mangsir, 18 in Poush, 49 in Magh, 41 in Falgun and 45 in Chaitra, according to the District Police Office.

Due to the open border, drugs are being smuggled from India. Recently, Nepali officials have been raising the issue for control in the Nepal-India joint border meeting, informed Police Chief Khatri.

“We are telling the Indian side to be serious about drug control,” he said. “Due to the open border, there are reports of drugs being imported into Kanchanpur and Kailali as well as the hilly districts. It is time for parents, all citizens of society, teachers and everyone to be concerned and sensitive about this issue. If the young generation is influenced by drugs, another problem may arise in the country.”

He informed that 35 percent of the prisoners in the Kanchanpur jail are accused of drug cases. “It is not possible to reduce drugs through the efforts of the police administration alone,” Khatri said. “Let us all join hands for this. Let us spread awareness in society.”
