Kanchanpur: Following the distribution of organic fertilizers by the Community Livestock Management Center in Shuklaphanta Municipality-9, farmers have reported increased soil fertility and improved agricultural production.

The manure produced by livestock at the management center has been made available to farmers at a subsidized rate, leading to enhanced soil quality and higher crop yields.

Ramesh Bahadur Air, Ward Chairman of Shuklaphanta-9, stated that arrangements have been made to provide organic fertilizers to farmers at Rs. 4,500 per tractor. “We are continuously raising awareness among farmers about the negative effects of chemical fertilizers and the long-term benefits of organic fertilizers,” he said. “While chemical fertilizers degrade soil quality over time, organic fertilizers enhance its fertility sustainably.”

Air noted that demand for organic fertilizers has been increasing due to recent awareness campaigns. Currently, 15 to 20 tractor loads of fertilizer are in stock. He added that farmers who provide straw to the center are eligible to receive fertilizer free of charge. “We will provide free fertilizer to farmers who bring a tractor of straw,” he said. “This helps ensure a steady supply of straw for livestock and reduces costs for the center.” The proceeds from fertilizer sales are deposited into the municipality’s reserve fund and will be used for ward infrastructure development.

The center, established to manage stray livestock, currently houses more than 400 animals. The municipality covers the costs of fodder, grass, medication, care, and grooming for the livestock.

Local potato farmer Lal Bahadur Air said that the use of organic fertilizers has visibly improved soil quality and crop yields. “I cultivate potatoes on five bighas, and the fertilizer from the center has been very effective,” he said. Similarly, farmer Bhagiram Chaudhary added, “Earlier, crops looked good with chemical fertilizers, but over time the soil quality declined. Since switching to organic fertilizers, the soil feels alive again.”

Karan Singh Budha Air, head of the municipality’s agriculture department, emphasized that organic fertilizers not only enhance soil fertility but also have positive impacts on human health and the environment. He added that the municipality has adopted a policy to reduce chemical fertilizer use and promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices through long-term planning and awareness campaigns.
