Danger of Karnali River flooding villages around it increases
Dhangadhi: The danger of Karnali River flooding the villages around it has increased.
The danger of Karnali River flooding the villages has increased after the embankment constructed in Shahipur area of Tikapur Municipality Ward No. 5 of Kailali was damaged by the heavy flow of Karnali River. The danger of the river flooding Narayanpur and Satti area through Shahipur has increased after the embankment constructed by Rani, Jamara and Kulariya Irrigation Project of National Pride was destroyed by the river last year.
Mayor of Tikapur Municipality Tapendra Rawal said that the river's water level has intensified the erosion after the embankment and launcher built last year were washed away. "About 150 meters of embankment and launcher has been washed away and only one meter is left," he said. Ward No. 6, 7, 8 and 9 of Tikapur will be affected if the river floods the settlement.
A meeting of the Municipal Disaster Management Committee are preparing to start the embankment work immediately, a team of the Nepal Army has already studied the site, said Rawal. "We have decided to start the work immediately by procuring the necessary materials for the embankment. Probably the embankment work will start from today. It has been agreed to employ the consumers of manpower irrigation canal," said Mayor Rawal.
After the embankment started collapsing, the river is being controlled by using large stones provided by Ranijamara Kulariya Irrigation Project. The municipality is going to manage the embankment using bamboos as well.
Similarly, Rani Jamara Kulariya Irrigation Project will manage the required nylon nets, empty bags and other necessary materials and manpower. The problem of erosion is increasing every year due to the river turning towards Kailali and narrowing of the river.
There are many banks in the middle of the river in the southern region from Chisapani of Karnali river. Due to the accumulation of sand in these banks every year, the embankment constructed is destroyed by the river changing its course.
