Ramesh Lekhak Urges Government to Rebuild Collapsed Dodhara-Chandani Suspension Bridge
Dhangadhi: Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak has urged the government to reconstruct the Dodhara-Chandani suspension bridge over the Mahakali River following its collapse.
Lekhak visited the site on Friday to inspect the collapsed structure, expressing dismay over its condition and calling for its immediate reconstruction. He also urged the government and relevant authorities to ensure the bridge’s proper preservation and regular maintenance.
Lekhak said the Dodhara-Chandani suspension bridge was not merely a structure facilitating local movement but also a part of the nation’s historical heritage. He recalled that there was a time when people traveling from Dodhara-Chandani to other parts of Nepal had to pass through Indian territory. The construction of the bridge over the Mahakali River played a crucial role in directly connecting the region with the rest of the country.
Recalling his proposal to construct the suspension bridge and connect Dodhara-Chandani after being elected as a Member of the House of Representatives from Kanchanpur in 2056 BS (1999 AD), Lekhak said some people had mocked the plan, considering it impossible at the time. However, he noted that the project became a reality with government funding and the efforts of Nepali technicians and builders.
He further highlighted that the bridge’s construction contributed to the development and expansion of technology for building long suspension bridges in other parts of Nepal as well.
