Six women arrested with 525 packets of ‘Super Power’ tobacco from Nepal-India border, two escape
Dhangadhi: Gaurifanta police in India have seized illegal tobacco being smuggled from the Nepal-India border and arrested six Nepali women. Two other women involved in the incident managed to escape.
According to Gaurifanta police, a group of women was found acting suspiciously during a routine check at around 11 am on Thursday on the unpaved road leading from Kavach Outpost Kajaria to Mohana River Ghat. When police attempted to inspect them, two women left their bags behind and fled, while six women were taken under control.
The arrested women have been identified as Dharma Bik (Kalpana), Laxmi Bista (Jamuna), Menuka Kumari Singh and Ishwori Thakulla (Jayashree) of Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City-9, Basanti (Jharna) of Bangara Katan, Dhangadhi-8, and Bimala of Kanchanpur district, according to Indian police.
Police recovered 525 packets of ‘Super Power’ brand tobacco from the arrested women and the bags left behind by the absconding women. The seized tobacco has an estimated market value of Rs 47,250 in India.
Police said the women failed to present the required documents for transporting the tobacco, following which the seized items were taken under control and handed over to the Gaurifanta Customs Office for necessary legal procedures.
Indian police have stated that further investigation into the incident is underway and efforts are ongoing to locate the two women who escaped.
