Kathmandu: The government has temporarily banned the registration of new public vehicles across the country.

The decision has been taken with the aim of controlling rising air pollution, traffic congestion, traffic jams, and the disorderly operation of public transport.

On Thursday, the Department of Transport Management issued a circular to the concerned ministries and local levels across all seven provinces, directing them not to register any new public vehicles, including electric ones.

According to the department, daily movement has become increasingly difficult due to the lack of a scientific and systematic public transport system. It stated that the decision was made in view of growing traffic congestion, rising fuel prices, and the impact of pollution.

The department further noted that Sub-section (3) of Section 24 of the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049, provides a legal basis to control vehicle registration in the interest of the public, environmental protection, and road management.

The government has stated that the decision will remain in effect until a long-term plan for the management and improvement of public transport is developed. It has also clarified that no new public vehicles will be registered nationwide until further notice.
