Over 7,000 online betting apps and websites shut down
Kathmandu: More than 7,000 online betting applications and websites have been shut down as part of the government’s governance reform measures.
In implementing the decision, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority has coordinated with internet service providers to block such platforms. According to Deputy Director Surya Prasad Lamichhane, service providers have been instructed to identify and shut down illegally operating betting apps and websites.
“So far, more than 7,000 such URLs and apps have been shut down. In the last one week, the authority has received more than 50 complaints about online betting through various means including telephone, email, and messages. Action has been taken to address all of them,” he told RSS.
Among the 100 governance reform agenda items approved by the Council of Ministers on Chaitra 13, item number 42 mandates the closure of betting-related apps and websites within 24 hours. Accordingly, the Authority has promptly shut down all identified platforms operating through electronic means in coordination with internet service providers.
As per Sub-section (4) of Section 125 of the Criminal Code, 2074, betting or facilitating betting is prohibited. Violations can lead to confiscation of the involved amount, imprisonment for up to one year, and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.
Similarly, the Advertisement (Regulation) Act, 2066 bans advertisements that promote gambling or the unauthorized buying and selling of lottery tickets, with violations carrying penalties of up to one year imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 10,000.
The government has once again urged the public not to use or operate betting apps and websites and warned of strict action against illegal activities. It has also encouraged individuals to report any suspicious platforms to the concerned authorities.
