Dhangadhi: Four Nepali nationals have been arrested at the Gaurifanta border crossing in Kailali with 52 tolas of gold and nearly one kilogram of silver. The individuals, from Kailali, Bardiya, and Surkhet, were apprehended by Indian police on Tuesday evening while entering Nepal.

A police team at the BOP Gaurifanta check post, in coordination with the Maharashtra Crime Branch of India, took the suspects into custody.

The arrested have been identified as Deepak Bahadur Singh, 25, of Geruwa Rural Municipality Ward No. 2 in Bardiya; Bhuwan Singh Chalaune, 37, of former Bijaura-5 in Surkhet; Jeevan Kumar Tharu, 47, of Darakh-2 in Kailali; and Khemraj Devkota, 56, of Baliya-3 in Kailali, according to Indian authorities.

Police recovered 616.9 grams (52.9 tolas) of gold and 780.8 grams of silver from the suspects. Initial investigations indicate that the group had stolen gold and silver ornaments from a jewellery shop in Maharashtra and attempted to smuggle them into Nepal.

The four individuals have been handed over to Lakhipur Khiri, India, by the Crime Branch and Gaurifanta police for further investigation.
