Nepal government orders brick industry to start firing only after mid-Poush
Dhangadhi: The Government of Nepal has issued new regulations for the brick industry, mandating that brick firing across the country will not be allowed before mid-Poush.
Baldev Singh Budal, Chairman of the Nepal Brick Industry Federation, Sudurpaschim Province Committee, stated that all brick industries in the province must fully comply with the government’s new standards and laws. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized that the latest directive aims to make brick production more systematic and environmentally friendly.
According to Chairman Budal, brick industries nationwide are now required to commence firing only after mid-Poush, aligning with the government’s plan to reduce environmental pollution, particularly the dense smoke and fog observed during winter. “We welcome this positive step by the government and consider it our duty to follow the law,” he added.
Pollution levels are highest in Poush due to extreme cold and fog. The government anticipates that air quality will improve from Magh to Falgun as winds disperse pollutants, which will have a positive impact on public health.
Chairman Budal also clarified that the government has ordered the complete closure and ban of traditional, highly polluting chaff kiln industries. “There is now no option but to adopt modern, environment-friendly technologies. Old methods are harmful to both health and the environment,” he said, warning that non-compliant industries will face legal action.
He added that the federation is actively coordinating with the government to address challenges faced by industrialists and expressed confidence that while the new rules may cause short-term inconvenience, they will benefit the brick industry sector in the long term.
