Dhangadhi: Bada Dashain festival sees surge in homebound travellers
The grand Hindu festival of Bada Dashain commenced yesterday, marking the start of a significant return of Nepalese expatriates through the Nepal-India border to celebrate the upcoming festivities, including Tihar.
Major border crossings, such as Gouriphanta, Gaddachouki, Jhulaghat, Pulghat, and Khakarula, are witnessing a daily influx of thousands of individuals. In anticipation of the increased foot traffic, security officials from both Nepal and India have coordinated efforts to facilitate smoother movement across the borders. However, travelers continue to face challenges due to ongoing spot checks, causing delays and inconveniences.
Armed Police Superintendent Dal Bahadur Pandey reported that, despite the hassles, overall movement has improved compared to previous years. He emphasized that while the Uttar Pradesh police stationed at the checkpoints have a minimal role, the SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) is effectively aiding the process. Security measures include check posts at key locations along the Trinagar customs border, including Mohana Bridge and Pulwari.
The posts focus on preventing the importation of banned and fraudulent items. Recently, significant numbers of foreign nationals have returned through the Gaddachouki, Jhulaghat, Gauriphanta, Pulghat, and Khakarula crossings, demonstrating the festival's importance for those abroad.
