Kailali District Court registers 228 prostitution cases in a year
Dhangadhi, Nepal – Over the past year, Kailali District Court has recorded 228 cases related to prostitution and other sexual offenses, according to recent statistics.
These cases, filed under various categories including forced labour, child sexual abuse, and unnatural sex, reflect significant legal activity in the region. Out of the 228 cases, 177 have been dismissed, and 51 remain unresolved.
The court plans to address these pending cases in the current financial year. Additionally, the court has dealt with 164 extortion cases, with 118 disposed of and 46 still awaiting final hearings. Of the seven cases related to extortion, four have been heard, while three are pending.
In terms of forced labor industry cases, 38 were registered, with 37 resolved and one still pending. The court has also dealt with 19 cases of child sexual abuse, settling 18 within the year.
There have been no cases of unnatural intercourse filed. Judge Dandapani Lamichhane commented on the legal and societal aspects of these issues, noting that coercive actions are not legally recognized as coercion under the current laws.
He emphasized that the law views individuals under 18 as minors and mentioned that societal attitudes toward young love and related legal restrictions have contributed to the number of cases. The Kailali District Court continues its efforts to address and resolve these complex cases, striving to balance legal standards with societal norms.
