Over a thousand families affected by natural calamities in Far West Nepal
Dhangadhi: More than a thousand families have been severely impacted by natural disasters in the Far West region over the past month.
The region has experienced a significant number of calamities, including floods, landslides, and heavy rains, with a reported 90 incidents occurring during this period.
The resulting devastation has led to considerable human and material losses, with initial estimates indicating financial damages totaling NPR 1.856 million. Tragically, eight people—six women and two men—lost their lives due to various disasters such as fires, snakebites, lightning strikes, floods, landslides, animal attacks, heavy rains, and storms.
Additionally, 29 individuals, including 18 women, sustained injuries in these incidents. In total, 1,025 families have been affected by such calamities within the last month. Among these, 17 homes were completely destroyed, while 14 were partially damaged. Furthermore, seven sheds were lost, and 29 livestock perished.
The Sudurpaschim Province Emergency Operation Center in Dhangadhi reports that property losses include NPR 721,000 due to fire, NPR 700,000 from windstorms, NPR 135,000 from landslides, and NPR 3.856 million as a result of heavy rains.
Annual Disaster Report: 47 Deaths in Far West Nepal Over the past year, 47 people have lost their lives in various natural disasters across Far West Nepal, comprising 23 men and 24 women. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law of Sudurpaschim Province, the fiscal year 2080-81 witnessed 11 deaths—seven men and four women—due to fires.
During this period, 29 people were injured in 267 fire-related incidents, resulting in an estimated property loss of NPR 121 million. Snakebites claimed the lives of eight people, evenly divided between men and women.
Additionally, 14 people—seven men and seven women—died from lightning strikes and storms. A total of 60 people were injured in 81 such incidents. From Shrawan 1, 2080 to Ashar 30, 2081, seven individuals died and 15 others were injured due to floods and landslides.
Wildlife attacks led to the deaths of four people and left 47 others injured. In other incidents, one person died from drowning and another from an earthquake. The report also highlights 29 injuries in 54 earthquake-related events.
Throughout the year, 144 houses were completely destroyed, 821 houses were partially damaged, and 96 sheds were lost. Additionally, 454 animals perished due to these disasters, resulting in estimated losses of NPR 127.42 million.
