Dhangadhi: The residence of Dirgha Bahadur Sodari, Chief Minister of Sudurpaschim Province, has been inundated due to flooding in the Sukuti Nala canal.

The water from the canal, which flows west of the Kailali Multipurpose Campus, has overflowed, flooding Sodari's house and the surrounding settlement in Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city-1, Shivnagar.

Santosh Mudbhari, the ward president of Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city-1, reported that 40 houses in the Shivnagar area have been flooded. The flooding has also affected the water tank and Neurod areas of Shivnagar.

Additionally, more than 35 houses in Basanttol have been inundated due to the overflowing Sukuti Nala. The floodwaters have soaked the food and clothes of many residents. The situation has been exacerbated by past actions of the Dhangadhi Municipality Development, which sold land along the river and canal banks.

This has led to rainwater entering settlements due to the narrowed downstream areas. The Sukuti Nala, along with the Kailali Nala that flows through Dhangadhi's main market, has had its banks registered in the names of individuals.

These historical errors have resulted in frequent flooding of the Dhangadhi market area during rains. The rainwater, instead of flowing into the canals and rivers, is entering the homes of locals. The Dhangadhi Municipality Development Committee has sold 933 bighas of land from ward numbers 1 to 5, with much of this land being on the riverbanks. Consequently, this has led to significant flooding issues during heavy rainfall.
