Dotyali and Tharu languages are being used as official languages in the far west.
Kathmandu: The Language Commission has prepared government language recommendations in all the states.
The working language is being determined based on the data of the National Census 2068 BS. Maithili, Tharu, and Magar languages, which have a large number of speakers, are seen to be applied in two states each. Similarly, experts have agreed to use Khas as the official language of Karnali.
The population of the state, the number of speakers of the language, language is spoken in more than one municipality, historicity, identity, development, and use of writing system are considered as the main basis for determining the official language.
Accordingly, languages with more than one lakh speakers are considered to be recommended by the provinces. There are Maithili, Limbu, and Bantawa languages in Province 1. Province 2 has Maithili and Bhojpuri, while Bagmati has Tamang and Newari.
Similarly, Gandaki has Magar and Gurung languages, Lumbini has Tharu and Awadhi. There are Magar and Khas-Nepali languages in Karnali and Dotyali and Tharu (Rana) languages in the far west. The official language is used as a special language in the legislature, executive, and judiciary.
Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Lovedev Awasthi, said that the recommendation process has been taken forward under the constitutional provision so that one or more languages spoken by the majority of the people can be made official.
No recommendation has been made in the official language as the number of speakers in Baitadeli and Achhami languages is divided.
