Surakshit Awash Griha (Safe Shelter) in Darchula provides accommodation to female victims of crime
Darchula: A rape victim woman of Lekam Rural Municipality who had been raped by her relative when her husband was in India for work has been staying in the safe shelter constructed in Dharchula. She also gave birth to the child she conceived after the rape.
She had lodged a complaint against the rapist but her stance made left her homeless. She did not know where to live or what to eat. After receiving the complaint, the District Police Office advised the woman to stay in the Surakshit Awash Griha (Safe Shelter) established in the district. The woman, who had come to Khalanga twice after lodging the complaint is now staying safely in a safe shelter set up near Tinkar Kheda in Khalanga.
Last year, the Social Empowerment and Women's Awareness Organization, with the support of the Far-Western Provincial Government, constructed a Safe Shelter, which has now become a support for the female victims of crime. The victims in the district had been unable to find safe accommodations for living therefore, the state government constructed the Surakshit Awash Griha to provide accommodation for such women, said Bhagwati Badal, housing manager. "Since the establishment of the Surakshit Awash Griha last year, only 10 women victims have received services. not many women are aware of the Surakshit Awash Griha, said Badal. He said that local level publicity and public awareness programs should be carried out to spread awareness about the facilities made available for women in need.
According to Badal, the women from Lekam, Naugad, Malikarjun, Shailyakhishar, and Sindhuli and Sindhupalchowk districts were accommodated in the house last year. While in the current fiscal year, two people from Mahakali Municipality are living in the shelter. Surakshit Awash Griha provides free food, transportation, and medical expenses to the victims for a maximum of 15 days, said Badal
