Vehicle Movement Halted at Trinagar-Gauriphanta Border Due to Flooding in India

Dhangadhi: Imports through the Trinagar-Gauriphanta border point in Kailali have been disrupted due to flooding in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The movement of cargo vehicles has been halted for three days following the obstruction of the road on the Indian side.

Reports indicate that Indian authorities suspended traffic after floodwaters inundated the Banshinagar area along the Paliya-Gauriphanta road, causing the collapse of two sections of a causeway (floating bridge). Indian media outlets have reported that floodwaters from the Mohana and Suheli rivers have reached as far as Paliya and Dudhuwa.

The Trinagar Customs Office stated that the suspension of vehicle movement at the border has affected the supply of essential goods from India to Sudurpaschim Province. Imports of petroleum products, cooking gas (LPG), food grains, fruits, vegetables and construction materials have been particularly impacted.

The halt in imports has disrupted the flow of cargo vehicles at the border point. It appears that resuming operations will be difficult until the damaged roads and bridges on the Indian side are repaired and flood conditions normalize.

According to Khadananda Khatri, the Assistant Chief District Officer of Kailali, India has kept the border closed for three days. He noted that there has been no clear information from the Indian side regarding when traffic movement will resume.

The Trinagar border point is a key gateway for importing petroleum products, food grains, daily essentials and industrial materials into Sudurpaschim Province. A prolonged closure could have a direct impact on market supplies and the prices of goods.
