Flash flood risk reported in 39 districts across the country

Kathmandu: The Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned of a risk of flash floods in small rivers across 39 districts, although the flow of the country’s major rivers remains below the alert level.

According to data released by the division at 8 am on Monday, there is currently no risk of flooding in the Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali and Mahakali rivers. The flow of their tributaries, as well as the Kankai, Kamala, Babai, East Rapti and West Rapti rivers, is also normal.

Despite the normal flow in major rivers, small rivers in Jhapa, Morang, Ilam, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Taplejung and Sankhuwasabha face a risk of flooding today. There is also a possibility of a significant rise in the flow of rivers in Sindhupalchowk, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchowk, Makawanpur, Gorkha, Lamjung, Kaski, Tanahun, Syangja, Parbat, Baglung and Myagdi.

Similarly, small rivers in Gulmi, Arghakhanchi, Pyuthan, Rukum East, Rukum West, Rolpa, Jajarkot, Salyan, Dailekh, Surkhet, Bardiya, Kailali, Bajhang, Darchula and Baitadi face a moderate risk of flash floods.

According to the division, water levels in small rivers across these 39 districts and surrounding areas may rise suddenly.

The division has also stated that the flow of some small rivers in Koshi and Gandaki provinces may increase suddenly over the next two days, on 26 and 27 Shrawan. It has urged residents in risk-prone areas to remain highly alert.
