Nepali Congress calls for parliamentary probe over alleged threats to CIAA officials
Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress has raised serious objections over allegations that the chief and officials of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority were summoned to the Prime Minister's Office and threatened.
Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Congress MP Narendra Kumar Kerung claimed that commission officials were called to the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday and pressured to issue arrest warrants. Stating that the issue surfaced through social media, he demanded that the government clarify the truth of the matter.
“A very shameful issue related to the government’s working style has come to light just 13 hours ago. It has been made public that the chief and officials of the constitutional body, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, were detained at the Prime Minister’s Office and forced to issue arrest warrants, or threatened with detention,” Kerung said in Parliament. “If this matter is true, the honorable Prime Minister should inform the House.”
Kerung called for the formation of a parliamentary investigation committee to ensure a fair inquiry into the incident. He stated that the allegations of pressure and threats against commission officials by summoning them to the Prime Minister’s Office are serious and that the truth must be established.
“A parliamentary investigation committee should be formed to find out the truth of this issue. Otherwise, the Prime Minister should appear in the House and provide clear information,” he said.
Similarly, MP Kerung also demanded that the government make public the report of the investigation commission formed to probe allegations against Home Minister Sudhan Gurung.
