Bajura: Ran Bahadur Bohara of Siradi-3, Budhinanda Municipality, in northeastern Bajura, has been earning more than Rs 6 lakh annually through tomato farming.

Bohara, who had spent several years working in India, started cultivating tomatoes in 2076 BS by renting one hectare of land near Dansangu. Today, his vegetable farming, which includes tomatoes and gopi jazz, generates a substantial annual income.

“I initially went to India like many others in the village seeking employment, but I did not find the work I wanted. I returned and started farming tomatoes on rented land,” Bohara said. “Now I am earning over Rs 6 lakh annually, and my family is living in peace and happiness. I have also been able to send my son and daughter to the city for higher education.”

Cold Storage Challenges
Bajura has long faced challenges due to the lack of cold storage facilities, making it difficult for farmers to store fruits and vegetables for extended periods.

“Many farmers are affected by the absence of safe storage systems. When vegetables ripen, we are forced to sell them at traders’ prices because there is no option to wait for a better price. Without storage, produce can easily spoil,” Bohara explained.

He added that establishing cold storage facilities in various locations would greatly benefit vegetable farmers and improve their livelihoods.
