Fertilizer shortage threatens winter crop production in Kailali

Dhangadhi: Farmers in Kailali are struggling to obtain the chemical fertilizers, particularly urea, needed for winter crops. Due to the shortage, many farmers are forced to stay awake all night and wait in long lines, yet numerous individuals return empty-handed without receiving the fertilizers.

The shortage is especially acute in Bhajani Municipality, where a significant portion of arable land lies. Farmers are concerned that the lack of timely fertilizer availability will negatively impact wheat, vegetable, and other winter crop production. Despite waiting overnight at sales centers, many farmers are unable to access fertilizers due to the limited supply being distributed.

Hari Prasad Chaudhary, a farmer from Bhajani, said the shortage has recurred this year, noting that he and others waited in line from midnight only to leave empty-handed by morning. Bharat Chaulagain highlighted that the difficulty in accessing fertilizers has increased production costs and lowered yields. Farmers have urged the government to improve the distribution system to ensure easier access to fertilizers.

Currently, fertilizers in the district are being distributed through Salt Trading Corporation and Agricultural Materials Company Limited. Salt Trading has announced plans to resume distribution within a few days. However, Agricultural Materials Company Limited indicated that limited government quotas make it difficult to supply all farmers at once.

Naval Singh Bogati, head of the provincial office in Dhangadhi, acknowledged the challenge, stating, “The fertilizer that comes to us is limited, the demand is high. It is difficult to provide it to everyone at once.” He confirmed that Salt Trading is preparing to resume distribution soon and assured that fertilizer supply is now being provided regularly.
