One accused released on bail in Sher Bahadur death case, family to appeal in high court
Dhangadhi: The District Court, Kailali, has released one of the two individuals accused in the murder of Sher Bahadur Chaudhary of Khamaura, Godavari Municipality-10, Kailali, on bail, while the other has been sent to judicial custody.
According to police, Chaudhary’s relatives had lodged a complaint alleging that local residents Lokendra Malla (Lucky) and his brother Bikas Malla of Ganyapadhura, Dadeldhura, chased and killed Chaudhary on the night of Asoj 23. However, the court released Bikas Malla on regular bail, a decision that has sparked dissatisfaction among the victim’s family.
Sher Bahadur, who had reportedly escaped through the back door of his house after an attempt on his life that night, was found dead the following day, on Asoj 24. His body was discovered near his home at the confluence of the Olani and Godavari rivers. The deceased’s family accused the Malla brothers of beating him to death and filed a case at the Malakheti Area Police Office.
Following the investigation, police submitted the case to the Kailali District Court, which sent Lucky Malla to jail for trial but released Bikas Malla on a normal date. The release led to protests from Chaudhary’s relatives, who surrounded the Malakheti Area Police Office demanding justice.
Baburam Chaudhary, coordinator of the Struggle Committee for Justice for Sher Bahadur, said that the protest has been temporarily postponed after the Government Attorney’s Office assured them that it would file an appeal at the High Court.
DSP Ran Bahadur Chand of the Malakheti Area Police Office stated that since the case is government-led, an appeal can be filed if the victims are dissatisfied with the District Court’s ruling. He confirmed that a verbal agreement had been reached between the victim’s side and the Government Attorney’s Office to proceed with an appeal.
