Dhangadhi: The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has decided to shut down social media platforms, including Facebook, that are not registered in Nepal, effective today. The decision was taken during a meeting at the ministry chaired by Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung.

The Cabinet meeting held on Bhadra 9, 2082, had directed all social media platforms operating in Nepal to register within a week. After failing to comply with the directive, the ministry has now made these platforms inoperable from today.

“A gradual implementation of the closure of unlisted social media will begin from today,” a ministry source said. The ministry has forwarded the decision to the Nepal Telecommunication Authority for enforcement.
