A herd of elephants spotted in Godawari Municipality, Kailali
Dhangadhi: A herd of elephants has entered the Godawari municipality of Kailali. Locals have said that a herd of elephants reached Lalpur area of Ward No. 8 of Godawari Municipality on Thursday night.
According to Gobind Chaudhary, the ward president there, a group of 14 elephants has reached Lalpur at night via Banbehda, Balmi. He told Dinesh Khabar, "A herd of elephants came at night.
Farmers' rice has been damaged. Damage was also seen in Banbehda, Balmi area in the morning. While crossing Godawari, a baby elephant fell into a pit, the army rescued the elephant in the middle of the night. Chaudhary said that the locals saw 14 elephants in the field at 2 o'clock in the night. It is believed that an area of the Godawari Municipality is an elephant corridor. The herd of elephants has also destroyed the potatoes planted in a paddy field of a local Dinesh Chaudhary.
On the other hand, according to Shuklaphanta National Park Assistant Warden Manoj Iyer, there are 22 elephants with babies in the Kailali-Kanchanpur area. They roam the forest for food. He said that 4/5 elephants permanently reside in the Shuklaphanta National Park area.
A large herd of elephants used to come and go from here. He said that a herd of elephants was seen on the cameras placed by the National Park in Churephedi. He says that elephants are facing grazing problems due to the destruction of elephant forests in Kailali-Kanchanpur.
