Sana Haat rescues a woman from Kailali border

Tikapur: A woman working at a dormitory in Pyuthan met a young man on Facebook. After a year-long relationship on Facebook, they decided to get married.

The young man promised to visit Kailali to get married to her. He reached Kailali with his mother.  After coming to Kailali, the young man, who is not a resident of Kailali, asked her to accompany him to India to get married.

The woman was worried when she found out that the young man was lying about his intentions, but the woman had no choice but to go with him. The Sana Haat organisation that were monitoring the situation at Khakraula, the border point of Kailali, to reduce trafficking, became suspicious of them.

The young man said that they were a married couple going to India for employment. The young man was taken under control after the Nepalese representative interrogated him from Sana Haat organisation. "When I saw the sisters of Sana Haath, I felt safe, and I confided in them.

The sisters called the police," said the rescued woman. "The young man who deceived me was arrested in a case of trafficking. I am learning to be a tailor. I got a second chance in life, now I will live my life beautifully.” Women and children crossing the Nepal-India border for employment are at a risk of being trafficked.

If these women are not rescued in time, the risk will increase, says Tulsi B.K, station coordinator of Nepal. "We have to be very skeptical at the border. We rescued 301 women and children last year," she said. "We have processed four trafficking cases in two years. Those who go to India for employment are at higher risk of being sold.” Station coordinator B.K says that Nepali women are at greater risk as they go to Indian forests for hay and firewood and also go to India for shopping.

"They say they go to cut grass, how can we stop them? Those who go to such places have a high chance of not returning,” she said. “Last year, a teenager who went to cut grass was sold from the forest.

We rescued the girl a month later with the help of the Indian police and brought her to Nepal.” Sana Haath Nepal works towards rescuing and rehabilitating women and children that are trafficked.

"Sana Haath Nepal has a checking booth situated at the border with has helped the police in catching traffickers," said Arun Bam, a police inspector at the Area Police Office, Tikapur. They are assisting in rescuing the victims and catching suspects during interrogation.”-RSS
