President Lamichhane instructs party members not to form factions
Chitwan: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Ravi Lamichhane has instructed party members not to form factions within the party. Addressing the closed session of the general convention held here today, he said that factions and sub-groups would not lead the party to success.
President Lamichhane said, “If we also form factions and sub-groups, the results we get from our party will be the same as those of the old parties. There will be no difference. If we want to get different results, we have to do something different.” Urging participants to exercise discretion in the general convention, he added, “5.2 million people used their discretion to win us, we should also use that same discretion.”
He said that the selection of representatives was done through discretion. He further stated that the Rs 5,000 paid by representatives was optional and could be refunded if necessary. He said, “You can take back the Rs 5,000 you paid if you want. The expenses incurred for staying for so many days have been high, it would be better if those who can afford it say that they will pay for their friends.”
Regarding the general convention election, he expressed confidence that whoever wins, the party will succeed. He said, “No matter who wins in the election, the bell-bearer will win. I am not in favor of anyone.” Chairman Lamichhane added, “Who you vote for is your business. The RSP is not the one who tells you not to vote for someone.”
He clarified that no one will be denied the right to compete for leadership. He said that rumors suggesting that former MPs or ministers will not be allowed to contest are baseless.
He said, “All friends, old and new, have the right to compete according to their qualifications and abilities.” Stating that the party has not made any formal decision on voting preferences, he urged delegates to use their discretion in selecting leadership. He added, “The RSP is a party that runs on ‘discretion’ rather than ‘whip.’”
Emphasizing that internal disagreements should be resolved through discussion within the party, President Lamichhane warned delegates not to take disputes to the streets or public spaces. He said the RSP should set an example by resolving differences and concluding the general convention in a disciplined, healthy and clean manner.
The formal proceedings of the closed session began after Party President Lamichhane delivered the opening speech. Preparations are underway to conclude the closed session today and proceed with the election process.
