Guigad Khola bridge still non-operational after 15 years, locals face risky travel
Bajura: The Guigad Khola Bridge, part of the Sanfe-Martadi road section connecting the district headquarters of Bajura, has not been fully operational even after 15 years, forcing locals to undertake risky journeys.
Although it was claimed that the construction was completed, the bridge has failed to pass testing due to poor quality. During a load test, it was found that the bridge, which was designed to carry 45 tons, could not withstand even 30 tons, making its use further unsafe.
The Road Division Office, Sanfebagar, has issued a notice allowing only one vehicle at a time on the bridge to reduce the risk of accidents. However, transport entrepreneurs say confusion persists due to a lack of clarity regarding vehicle capacity.
Construction of the bridge began in 2068 BS, with an agreement to complete it by 2070 BS, but the contractor company Rajendra Thigin JV failed to complete the work on time. The bridge has started deteriorating within a few years of its completion, while river erosion has weakened its pillars.
According to the Road Division Office, more than 95 percent of the approximately Rs 59.6 million cost has already been paid. However, the expected quality has not been achieved.
Locals have demanded immediate reconstruction of the bridge. Local resident Mangal BK has expressed concern that a major accident could occur at any time due to the bridge’s weakness on the main road.
