Dhangadhi: When Chakra Bam steps onto a stage, the atmosphere transforms. The audience sways instinctively to the rhythmic beats of the Madal, Hudko, and Damaha, sounds that echo from the rugged hills of Nepal’s far western region. He carries with him not only rhythm but roots, the stories, dialects, and emotions of Sudurpashchim, a region renowned for its deeply expressive musical tradition known as Deuda.

At a time when Nepal’s mainstream music industry was largely dominated by pop, hip hop, and Western fusion, Chakra Bam reintroduced Deuda to the national stage and redefined its contemporary identity. He transformed what was once considered a purely local folk expression into a commercially celebrated genre by blending traditional lyrical structures with modern musical arrangements while preserving its authenticity. Today, his songs are not only regional hits but also resonate across Nepal, India’s Uttarakhand, and among Nepali communities in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and many other countries.

A voice born from the hills

Born on 20 March 1993 in Kailali district of Sudurpashchim Province, Chakra Bam grew up immersed in the cultural richness of his homeland. Over time, he emerged as one of the most distinctive voices of Nepal’s folk revival movement. His musical identity blends Deuda with lok pop, dohori, and contemporary pop influences, making the genre accessible to urban youth while preserving the essence of western Nepali cultural identity.

From modeling to music

Before becoming a household name in Nepali music, Bam began his artistic journey as a model in 2070 BS, corresponding to 2013 to 2014 AD. His compelling stage presence and natural charisma soon led him into the music industry. His debut song MotaChamalako, followed by Naach Meri Jhuma, marked the beginning of a transformative artistic journey.

Since then, he has delivered a remarkable series of popular songs including KarnaliTira, Naach Meri Jhuma, Bhan Sali, Oh Meri Bhauju, Daaru Sadkaune, Laal Kurti, Oe Kajal, Bambai Gaijane, DeusiBhailoDeuda, JaadKoJhol, Chiya Ko Hotel, Kati Ramro Holi, Hari Bhajan, Saurai Lagi, Naugedi, and Hit Kaanchi. Each composition carries his signature identity, a vibrant fusion of energetic rhythm, regional essence, and emotional storytelling.

To date, Chakra Bam has recorded more than 150 songs and appeared in over 300 music videos, a remarkable achievement for an artist who rose from grassroots beginnings. His body of work has not only entertained millions but has also revived pride in Sudurpashchim’s dialect, identity, and cultural heritage.

From temples to dance floors

He began his journey at a time when Deuda received limited mainstream recognition. His early years were marked by struggle and perseverance. For nearly three years, he immersed himself deeply in traditional musical forms before gradually introducing modern elements. This evolution eventually led him to innovate a distinctive fusion of devotional songs and club anthems, reshaping Nepal’s folk musical landscape.

What makes Chakra Bam truly unique is his ability to bridge generations and genres. His music transitions seamlessly from devotional bhajans performed in temples and village festivals to high energy dance tracks that dominate urban nightlife. His songs are played at religious gatherings, weddings, nightclubs, and across social media platforms alike, a rare versatility that unites Nepali youth and elders on a shared emotional ground.

Digital platforms have further amplified his reach. Many of his YouTube videos have garnered millions of views, while TikTok and Instagram have transformed short segments of his music into viral trends. Through this digital expansion, Deuda has reached not only traditional audiences but also a dynamic global digital generation.

Recognition and awards

While many folk artists struggle to balance cultural authenticity with commercial success, Chakra Bam has successfully achieved both, earning national recognition and widespread respect for his artistic contribution. His role as a singer, model, and ambassador of Deuda music has been acknowledged by several prestigious institutions.

In 2020 he received the National power news music award for Best Deuda Music. In 2022 he was honored with the NIM Award for Best Deuda Model and also received the RastriyaSamabeshi Music Award for Best Deuda Model. In 2023 he earned the OS Nepal Music Award for Best Deuda Male Singer.

Each recognition reflects not only his musical excellence but also his significant role in bringing the rhythm of Nepal’s western hills into the national mainstream.

The cultural impact

Through his music, Chakra Bam narrates the story of his land, the rivers of Karnali, the hills and plains of Sudurpashchim, the joy of festivals, and the emotional depth of migration. He represents a generation of artists committed to preserving regional traditions in an increasingly globalized world.

His rise has inspired countless young singers and musicians from Sudurpashchim to pursue careers in folk music, proving that local identity can become a powerful source of national and global pride.

National media outlets and local publications frequently highlight Bam’s performances, often describing him as a cultural bridge connecting rural authenticity with urban energy and uniting Deuda audiences across geographical and cultural boundaries.

The digital folk revolution

In the digital era, Chakra Bam has effectively harnessed social media to reshape the narrative of folk music. His official Facebook and Instagram platforms serve as vibrant spaces where fans, event organizers, and fellow artists engage. Behind the scenes content, festival tours, and community interactions reflect his strong connection with audiences.

From performing rural town squares to sells out international concerts in Dubai, London, Tokyo, Seoul, and Melbourne, Bam’s journey demonstrates that authentic art always finds its audience. His melodies transcend borders and resonate with every heart that beats in rhythm with cultural belonging.

A proud son of sudurpashchim

Chakra Bam is not merely a singer but a symbol of Sudurpashchim’s cultural pride and evolving identity. His voice represents those who dance on mountain soil, who sing of love, struggle, and celebration in their mother tongue.

Today, as Deuda continues to gain global recognition, his work stands as living evidence of music’s power to unite people from clubs to temples, from youth to elders.

During festival seasons in western Nepal, his music becomes a unifying force, played in homes, towns, and across the diaspora. Audiences eagerly await his next release, and he consistently delivers.

As his journey continues, one truth remains clear: Chakra Bam is not only dominating music charts, he is dominating hearts. In doing so, he has ensured that the rhythm of Sudurpashchim will echo far beyond Nepal’s borders for generations to come.

People who once sang Deuda in jungles, homes, and village squares now feel empowered, as Bam has brought their tradition into the national spotlight. He has given Deuda a powerful rebirth.

According to him, in a personal conversation with me, he expressed that even after achieving millions of views, global tours, and immense popularity, his artistic journey still feels incomplete. He continues to aspire to explore the depth of Deuda and the traditions of Sudurpashchim, hundreds of untold stories and melodies that, as he describes, still give him purpose.
