Kanchanpur: The provincial government has expressed concern over a 10 percent increase in poverty in the Far West Province, as it moves toward finalizing its second five-year plan. Officials stated that poverty has risen in the current fiscal year compared to the fiscal year 2077/78.

The Provincial Policy and Planning Commission is currently holding discussions on the draft of the second five-year plan across various local levels in the province.

According to Dr. Hemraj Lamichhane, an expert involved in drafting the plan, the poverty rate in the Far West has increased from 24.6 percent in the fiscal year 2077/78 to 34.16 percent. The highest poverty rate has been recorded in Achham at 49.58 percent.

He stated that the second plan prioritizes employment generation and skill development, access to quality education and health services, strengthening agriculture and the rural economy, expanding social security and targeted programs, and ensuring good governance with effective implementation.

“This plan has been prepared with a long-term vision for a self-reliant, prosperous and beautiful Far West. Its objectives include reducing poverty, creating employment, and improving income levels by increasing production and productivity,” he said. “It also aims to ensure quality, accessible, and sustainable infrastructure development, along with a healthy, capable, and dignified standard of living.”

The plan also incorporates climate adaptation, conservation, promotion and sustainable use of natural resources, transparent and accountable public service delivery, disaster risk reduction, and technology-friendly development. Priority has been given to improving local income levels through the development of agriculture, livestock, small industries, and tourism.
