Election commission and TikTok partner to prevent technology misuse in elections
Kathmandu: Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has stated that planned measures are being implemented to prevent the misuse of technology in the upcoming elections for members of the House of Representatives scheduled for Falgun 21.
Speaking at the MoU handover ceremony between the Election Commission and social media platform TikTok, Bhandari said the agreement represents a historic partnership aimed at preventing the election environment from being undermined.
Acting Commissioner Bhandari expressed confidence that TikTok’s cooperation following the agreement will support efforts to curb violations of the election code of conduct and the spread of misinformation. He also thanked TikTok for its decision to provide free support to prevent possible misuse of the platform during the elections.
At the event, Commission Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai and TikTok’s Head of Social Policy and Government Relations, Ferdous Al Mattakin, formally exchanged the memorandum of understanding.
The Commission believes that the partnership will contribute to maintaining transparency in the House of Representatives elections and help ensure the dissemination of accurate, reliable and timely information to the public. It also stated that TikTok’s cooperation will be important in controlling misleading information and harmful content.
