Landslide victims in Bajura await housing after devastating floods
Bajura: Residents of Bichhya and Kawadi in Bajura are still waiting for permanent housing after floods and landslides caused extensive damage on the night of August 11.
In Bichhya, Himali Rural Municipality-1, eight houses were completely washed away, and nine more are at risk. In Kawadi, Ward No. 5, 16 houses were washed away and 32 houses were fully damaged. Locals are currently spending nights under tarpaulins.
Suvalal Thapa, a resident of Bichhya now living in the open under tarpaulins after losing his home, said, “All the food was washed away along with the house. The rural municipality has provided rice, but housing remains a major concern.” He urged the local government to arrange permanent shelter for the affected families.
Although no human casualties were reported, the floods and landslides caused significant damage to physical infrastructure, including houses, roofs, land, bridges, roads, schools, and drinking water systems.
Himali Rural Municipality has distributed as much relief as possible. Chairman Govinda Bahadur Malla stated that they are seeking support from provincial and federal authorities to provide shelter and clothing for the victims. Sheetal Bahadur Ratal, Information Officer at the District Administration Office, Bajura, confirmed that a request has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs to arrange housing for those affected.
