Safe housing project brings hope to 11 Dalit families in Kanchanpur

Kanchanpur: Janajali Sarki of Simalkhet, Shuklaphanta Municipality-10, is on the verge of fulfilling a lifelong dream—living in a safe and secure home.
For years, Sarki endured the hardships of living in a dilapidated house vulnerable to the elements. “During the rainy season, protecting food, clothes, and other valuables from leaks was a struggle. We also lived in constant fear of snakes, scorpions, and other poisonous insects,” he said. “The pain of having the roof blown away by storms is indescribable.”

Limited by financial constraints, Sarki never imagined owning a concrete house. However, a safe housing initiative launched by the municipality in partnership with the NGO NIDS has given him renewed hope. Under the project, 11 safe homes are being constructed for Dalit families in Simalkhet.

Ward Chairman Lal Bahadur Air informed that each house consists of two rooms and is being built at a cost of Rs 650,000. He expressed confidence that the construction will be completed and the homes handed over within the month.
