Kanchanpur: The case related to the assault on Ward Chair Rabindra Devkota of Bhimdatta Municipality-18, Kanchanpur, has been settled through mediation. The incident, which took place at the CPN-UML party office in Kanchanpur around the end of July 2080, had reached court but was later resolved with the consent of both parties.

Devkota, who was also a district member of the party at the time, was allegedly assaulted during the 10th district convention of the Youth Association Nepal Kanchanpur. The case, which has now been settled, had remained under judicial process for nearly four years.

Ward Chair Devkota had filed a case against six individuals, accusing them of attempting to kill him during the assault. As part of the mediation agreement, the defendants have provided Rs 350,000 as medical expenses.

Following the incident, Devkota received treatment at Mahakali Provincial Hospital, Maya Metro Hospital in Dhangadhi, and Helping Hand Hospital in Kathmandu.

Devkota stated that those involved in the incident at the party office realized their mistake, leading to a procedural reconciliation in court with a commitment to prevent such incidents in the future.

Youth Association Kanchanpur leader Pravin Bogati said the settlement was reached after both sides reviewed the incident that occurred during political activities and acknowledged their shortcomings. He added that there was an agreement to promote mutual cooperation and harmony instead of continuing legal disputes.

After the assault at the party office, incidents of lockouts, protests, actions, and dismissals had taken place. With the final settlement, party leaders and cadres have viewed the reconciliation as a positive example of resolving disputes through mutual agreement and cooperation.

Then party Politburo member and youth organization in-charge, current party leader Mahesh Basnet, was the chief guest at the inauguration of the 10th district convention. It is reported that differences emerged between the Navin Chand and Dinesh Bista groups during the convention.

Although the assault during political activities was described as a tragic and unnecessary incident, its resolution through reconciliation has been viewed positively both within the party and in society.
