Youth arrested in Kanchanpur for online game fraud involving thousands of rupees

Dhangadhi: A youth involved in a group accused of defrauding the public of large sums of money under the pretext of online gaming has been arrested. Police have taken 25-year-old Subash Bhat of Godavari Municipality-1 into custody.

The investigation began after a woman from Bedkot Municipality in Kanchanpur filed a complaint alleging fraud through online games. During the inquiry, it was confirmed that the defrauded amount had been transacted through Bhat’s bank account, said DSP Hem Bahadur Shahi, spokesperson of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur.

According to police, Bhat extorted approximately Rs 250,000 from the woman. He was arrested with the assistance of the Area Police Office, Sukhad.

Preliminary investigations indicate the involvement of a larger group in the scheme. The group is reported to have lured individuals through Facebook with attractive offers, claiming they had won large amounts through online games, and then demanded advance payments under the pretext of tax clearance to release the winnings.

Police sources said the group has been carrying out such fraudulent activities for a long time. SP Khatri stated that the victim is preparing to file a formal complaint on Monday, after which the investigation will be intensified.
