Shaheed Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences to begin operations from upcoming academic session

Kailali: Shaheed Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences in Geta, Kailali, which has faced delays due to infrastructure challenges, is set to become operational from the upcoming academic session. The announcement that the new government will prioritize the necessary budget and legal procedures for the university’s operation has generated excitement across the Far West region.

The Government of Nepal decided to establish the Shaheed Dasharath Chand National University of Health Sciences in a Council of Ministers meeting on 29th Magh, 2080. The government has invested over six billion rupees in the university, which spans approximately 51 hectares and includes 42 buildings.

Dr. Ananda Bahadur Chand, an elected member of parliament from Kailali Constituency No. 5, expressed confidence that the university will begin operations from the upcoming academic session, stating, “The necessary budget for the operation of the university has been ensured.” He noted that the university will open significant opportunities in education and healthcare for the Far West region.

The Shaheed Dasharath Chand National Health Sciences University Bill had been pending in the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives for the past two years. Dr. Chand said the new government will facilitate legal and practical measures to start academic programs at Geta and expand hospital services.

Initial plans include teaching MBBS to 50 students. The budget has been secured, with support from Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who has shown interest in the university’s operation. Khemraj Koirala, a member of the House of Representatives from Kailali Constituency No. 4, stated that lawmakers from the Far West worked to secure a budget of Rs 2.58 billion and that Prime Minister Shah is committed to advancing the university immediately.

The provincial government has approved the affiliation of Seti Provincial Hospital, Mahakali Hospital, and Tikapur Hospital to the university. University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi confirmed that preparations are underway to start teaching in four faculties and that the government has prioritized the university’s operation.

Lokraj Pandey (Ago), coordinator of the University Struggle Committee, expressed hope that the long-standing dream of the Far West people will finally be realized. The first University Assembly meeting will be held on campus at 9 am on the 25th. Prof. Dr. Joshi stated that all preparations for the meeting have been completed.

Previously, three University Assembly meetings were held in Kathmandu, but this will be the first on the university campus. The meeting will address university regulations, nomination and approval of working procedures, financial regulations, and procurement rules.
